LOCATION: Lucena del Puerto is a town located in the province of Huelva, approximately 20 minutes to the west of the city of Huelva. It is a town of approximately 2,500 residents. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldfjVI6b3a4).

Very few people speak English at school and in town; you should make an attempt to learn some Spanish before coming to Spain. Please keep in mind that only a few of the teachers speak fluent English as well.

SCHOOL: CEIP Miguel de Cervantes is a unique school. It is a center that teaches children from primary school age up to late high school (15-16). As an auxiliar you will only be assisting the children in 1st and 2nd year of ESO. These children range from 12-16 years old. The Language Auxiliar will assist four different groups, 12 hours a week distributed over 3 or 4 days, according to the school schedule.

SCHOOL CODE: 21002288 This is the school’s identification number, as there are many schools with the same or similar sounding names in Spain.

ASSIGNMENTS: As an auxiliar, the classes you will be covering will be: BIOLOGY, GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY, and PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY.

TRANSPORTATION: Bus transportation to or from Lucena is available, but it is quite limited. I would strongly recommend living in Huelva. It is likely impossible to live in Lucena itself, and not recommended as transportation options and basic services are quite limited due to it being such a small rural town. (https://damas-sa.es/)

HOUSING: In Huelva, there are primarily apartments. I would strongly advise waiting until you arrive in Spain to find permanent lodging, and Iván, the auxiliar coordinator will help you to find an apartment if you would like to reach out to him for help.

The first week or two, I’d advise staying in an AirBnB, hostel or hotel if you haven’t been able to see an apartment in person. I personally spoke with Iván, and he reached out to a friend who had an apartment available in a very convenient part of Huelva. He walked me through it via video call, and I agreed to stay there. I decided to live alone, and pay 350€ a month in rent plus utilities (water and electricity). If you choose to live with others, you will likely have to search more actively on your own.

The reason I suggest waiting to find lodging when you are in Spain is that there are many scams online, and many apartments do not appear the same in person as they do online. I will recommend the apartment in which I’m staying, and leave the information with Iván. DOCUMENTS: When applying and doing paperwork for the program, we urge you to use the same passport for all of the paperwork involved. If you mix passports and identity documents, it becomes very difficult bureaucratically to process all of the necessary paperwork you will need during your time in Spain.

CULTURE

In Casa Colón you will have access to concerts and temporary exhibitions. Nearby, you will find a small, but nice museum with temporary and permanent exhibitions. There are movie theaters in the Holea shopping center and Aqualon shopping mall. If you get enough people to go to the cinema in Aqualon, you can ask them to show the movie in English, French, Italian… etc.

LA RÍA DE HUELVA

If you enjoy taking walks and enjoying beautiful scenery, the Muelle del Rio Tinto offers views of the water as well as the Huelva skyline. Along the waterfront you'll also find multiple bars and cafes, some even offering live music as entertainment. Additionally there are kiosks that provide various styles of bikes and scooters for rent which you can use to follow the Paseo de la Ria to view the “Monumento a Colón.” Not far from there, you can find the Muelle de las Carabelas, a museum featuring replicas of all 3 of the ships used to complete Columbus' 1492 voyage. BARS AND TAPAS

Huelva is full of cheap and good tapas places all around the Plaza de Las Monjas, the Avenida de Andalucía, and the Isla Chica neighborhood. You can taste typical staple foods such as: croquetas de jamón, tortilla de patatas, chocos, gambas, strawberries, etc.

In Aqualon, not only do you have a movie theater, there is a bowling alley, shops and a climbing wall, in addition to great rooftop bars.

TRIPS

"We Love Spain" offers day trips and weekend trips to Portugal, Morocco, Córdoba, El Torcal, Ronda, Setenil de Las Bodegas. It is always well organized and a nice way to meet new people. https://www.welovespain.org/

The Facebook group "Enclave Deportivo" is a great way to hike around Huelva when you want to see the landscape and breathe some fresh air! https://enclavedeportivo.com/

SPORT

It is really easy to do sport in Huelva, between the numerous gyms, dance classes, football, basketball, and volleyball groups run by assistants and Erasmus students. The route along the river is ideal for those who love jogging and running. Recreativo de Huelva is the oldest football club in Spain, founded in 1889 by Alexander Mackay and Robert Russell Ross, overseas workers at the Rio Tinto mines.

SHOPPING

For all your shopping and fashion needs visit Holea, Huelva's popular shopping center which include a movie theater and a large Carrefour for expansive grocery hauls, or the local shops in the city center which line streets just south west of “Plaza de Las Monjas.”

A Personal Note:

To the incoming Language Assistant,

My name is Steven, and I have been the Language Assistant at CEIP Miguel de Cervantes for the past two years. For me personally, this has been an incredible and ultimately very gratifying experience, and I hope that it will be the same for you too.

As mentioned above, you will be working with children ranging from 12 to 16 years old. As with any growing teenagers, there are challenges and growing pains, but I have found that developing interactive activities with them to be a popular method of maintaining their interest across all subject matters.

The children will naturally be very curious about you at first, and if you continue to cultivate that curiosity and interest, it is possible to develop strong relationships with them that can make life in the classroom easy, and allow you to impart key elements of your culture and background with them.

In my experience, the teaching staff has been incredibly kind and receptive, and have gone above and beyond in making me feel welcome and at home here in Spain. Andalucia is a very special place, full of wonderfully kind people, beautiful music, and unique and delicious foods.

I would urge you to continually push yourself out of your comfort zone, ask many questions, and say yes to the myriad invitations you will receive while you are here. As with any part of life, there will be good days and challenging ones, and you have just taken the most challenging leap of them all- you have made it here to Spain. I congratulate you, and although I do not know you, I wish you the very best, and hope that your time spent in this beautiful country is as memorable as mine has been.
